STUDIOS, LOFTS & JAM SPACES
Montreal is home to one of the most active communities of artists in all of Canada and is well known throughout the world for its creative output. The availability of large post-industrial spaces, affordable rents, cheap living, and a supportive funding system makes life as an independent artist possible in this city. As welcoming as Montreal is to those pursuing independent passions, sustaining a career remains an ongoing challenge. Getting work out into the world is key to the longevity of any artist’s career. It is in Montreal’s studios, lofts, and jam spaces where the magic happens–where artists cultivate their practices and prepare to put their work out into the world. Studios, Lofts & Jam Spaces is a documentary series that follows ten local artists as they put their work out into the world. Go behind the scenes for a glimpse into the world of Montreal’s fabled studios and loft spaces.
2fik is a Paris-born visual artist, of Moroccan heritage, living in Montreal. His photographs depict complex situations populated by lively characters, each character played by 2fik himself. Whether he is recreating famous paintings or capturing his own invented characters in their daily lives, as they negotiate the streets, workplaces and public spaces of multicultural Montreal, his photographs are striking. In this episode, we follow 2fik from a photo-shoot in the Montreal underground, then to 2fik’s home as he prepares for an exhibition in Toronto. There, he will be performing one of his most controversial characters; the bearded, high-heeled, hijab-wearing Ludmilla-Mary, “who has an amazing walk and great legs.” Along the way we learn about 2fik’s past, his many colourful characters, and how they seem to be developing identities of their own.
